“But, I have no idea what to blog about” [throws hands up in frustration].

I hear this all the time. My response? Just blog about anything. Or write about nothing. It’s like an episode of Seinfeld, the show about nothing.

Quite literally, you can turn any thought or observation into a blog post.

  • What thoughts pop up while you’re having your morning coffee?
  • How about in line at the grocery store?
  • While waiting in the doctor’s office?

Write it all down.

You don’t have to know all the details or even the purpose of the blog at that moment. Just make a note on your phone, a napkin, or the back of a receipt to capture the thought for further investigation later.

In my own blogging practice, and for my clients, I maintain a working brainstorm board for blog topics, in Trello, Asana, or Google, like the ones below:

Asana Blog Brainstorm Board

Excel-Google Drive Blog Brainstorm Board

Anytime a blog idea pops into my crazy brain, I jot it down.

If I’m in front of my computer, I can add the idea right to my Asana system. If I’m out someplace, it goes in my Notes App on my iPhone. The beauty of this daily action is that the more I observe, it seems like the world around me opens up with more blog topic possibilities.

For example, I already know that in the coming weeks, I’ll write about:

  • Mismatched butter knives
  • A freezer full of frozen bananas,
  • The deeper meaning of coffee.

These are all thoughts I jotted down in my Notes app, and because I love to write, these will be my entertaining blogs, which I will post on medium.com. Every post does not need to be educational or salesy. In fact, every post shouldn’t be educational or salesy.

Strive to write blog posts that fall into each of these categories:

  • Educational Blog Posts – write and share about what you know. This positions you as a subject matter expert, and a reliable, trustworthy resource.
  • Inspirational Blog Posts – write about something you’ve overcome or a life lesson you’ve learned. This attracts like-minded people and makes you a role model for potential prospects.
  • Entertaining Blog Posts – write about a funny story and the outcome. This makes you human and relatable and someone your clients, would want to hang out with.

You already know that people want to do business with people they know, like, and trust.

How do you build those connections? By educating, inspiring and entertaining:

  • Don’t be afraid to show who you are and what makes you tick. The more genuine you are, the more people will connect because they will see the real you, not some overly-polished, perfectly-lit, filtered social media version of you. This is where you tap into your authentic voice.
  • Don’t be afraid to go deep into your vulnerabilities. This makes you relatable. Chances are if you’re feeling some kind of way, your clients are too.
  • DO be yourself! Imitating someone else is not sustainable, and your prospects will sense your inauthenticity. You “gotta just do you,” to quote one of my mentors.

If you’re already using my FREE Guide: From Blocked to Blogging, you can just drop your ideas into your system. I like to add notes in Asana, as I’m adding topics, so when I’m ready to start writing, I already have an excellent start to my first shitty draft. More on shitty drafts in another blog post.

So, no more throwing your hands up in frustration. Get busy brainstorming. You have plenty to write about!
